When should you service your outboard engine?

It is highly recommended to service your engine after the winter inactivity period, and prior to summer use. Regular service should be performed after first twenty (20) hours of usage.

The service should be carried out by an authorised service provider, which would include some of the key points mentioned below:

  • Check the fuel filter and clean if necessary
  • Removal and inspection of spark plugs
  • Check the carburettor and if need be, re-adjust
  • Check the starter (I and II pick up)
  • Change the oil in the base (foot) of the engine
  • Change the engine oil. One should change the oil more frequently, if the engine is used with low revs e.g. trawling fishing
  • Lubricate all the moving parts of the engine
  • Check zinc protectors
  • Check and tighten all the screws, nuts and washers

Regular service after 100 hours of usage

  • Lubrication of all moving parts of the engine. Frequency of doing so, should be higher, if the engine is used all the time
  • Engine oil change. One should change the oil more frequently, if the engine is used with low revs e.g. trawling fishing
  • Removal and inspection of spark plugs
  • Change the oil in the base (foot) of the engine
  • Check the fuel filter
  • Check zinc protectors
  • Lubrication of drive shaft
  • Change of water pump rotor (impeller)
  • Check all connections and insure the tight fit of the engine lid
